Kristiansholm
Bergen, Norway
The area regulation for Kristiansholm, Sandviken and Rosegrenden intends to strengthen a local center in Sandviken and Kristiansholm. It further seeks to clarify the future use of historic Kristiansholm, which is being developed as a separate islet – with a unique green area and sea access for everyone.
Located just north of Bergen's dense city center, the area has strong potential for varied urban development. Plans are being made for housing, as well as mixed business development and public/private services, active facades, trade and open spaces on land and at sea.We have worked closely with the City Heritage Board to develop the area with particular regard to historic and protected buildings. The proximity to Bergen School of Architecture (BAS) provides a very distinctive character and varied user group. The area will offer an enriching, new neighborhood for the whole of Sandviken. The unique location in the landscape, combined with distinctive qualities such as good sun conditions and proximity to the sea, are qualities that the development will both benefit from and reinforce. The planning approach is carefully adapted to the site, including local climatic conditions and historical building structures.
The residential development consists of apartment buildings and terraced houses that are built on 3-8 floors, for a total of approximately 400 homes. Through the transformation from commercial to residential area, the Kristiansholm islet and surrounding sea is once again made available to the public, doubling as a local center and social gathering place.
Maintaining cultural monuments and historical cross connections, while re-establishing and strengthening missing connections, has been an important part of the process.
