In early 2017, lundhagem was approached by a young couple to build their family winter cabin in the municipality of Voss. One of the members of the couple is a Voss native, which made this project special for them.

The brief was to create a place that could host the extended family and friends. 6 bedrooms with at least 2 sleeping places each, with special attention required for the hosts’ main suite; a dining table that could fit 14 guests; an office space for remote work; and a basement with a wine cellar and supporting functions. There should be spatial continuity between kitchen, dining and living areas.

The U-shaped plan was set to open towards a non-buildable plot to the west, with the courtyard benefiting from exposure to the evening sun.

The plan was developed in 3 levels, following the sloping terrain. A wing of bedrooms, with a bathroom, entrance hall and ski storage, towards the access ramp and carport; a bedroom and bathroom, and a kitchen open to the courtyard, in the middle; and the living-room, office and main suite towards the valley, with its view.

The access to the wine cellar and supporting functions is made from the middle level, via a sculptural, concrete staircase. The basement walls and floor slabs are made of black tinted concrete. On top of them lie the timber walls and the sloped roof, clad with treated pine, on the inside and the outside of the cabin. The fireplace in black concrete rises from the floor, creating a vertical sculptural element and providing lateral stability.

The living-room has two zones, with two opposite ambiances. One zone is more open, brighter and more exposed, and benefits from the large glass façade towards the valley. The other is more enclosed, more intimate and darker, with its focal point in the generous fireplace. A meandering sofa connects the two zones.
