KHiO

Oslo, Norway

An adaptive reuse of the previous Christiania Seilduksfabrikk (Oslo Sailcloth Factory) located on the banks of the Akerselva river at Grünerløkka in central Oslo in order to house the many academic departments of Kunsthøgskolen i Oslo (Oslo National Academy of the Arts) within a single location for the first time in their history.

Located on the banks of the Akerselva river at Grünerløkka in central Oslo, Seilduksfabrikk was one of the largest and best preserved industrial facilities from the end of the 1800s. As such, the Inspectorate of Ancient Monuments and Historic Buildings in Oslo established strict guidelines and parameters for the project with a principal strategic approach that existing buildings should be renovated but that physical measures taken should be few and obvious, rather than numerous and indistinct.
